Pula is the largest city in Istria, Croatia and is one of the most attractive towns on the Adriatic coast. Pula like the rest of the region is known for its mild climate, the turquoise water of the Adriatic, and the natural beauty of Pula's surrounding countryside. The city of Pula has a long tradition of wine making, fishing, ship building and tourism. Pula has been Istria's administrative centre since the Roman times.
The city is best known for its many impressive monuments from the ancient Roman times, the most famous of which is the arena, its first century amphitheatre, the largest in the world. This is one of the best preserved amphitheatres from antiquity and is still in use today. Other sites include the temple of Augustus, the town walls, the square and the old Forum.
There are many good small restaurants dotted in the old town where the local cuisine is served for very reasonable prices. Pula has its own international airport with direct services from many European cities. Ryanair operates direct flights from Dublin and London three times a week. Many flights to Pula are charter rather than scheduled, while other flights are seasonal (summer only). There are buses from Rijeka, Trieste, and Venice. There is also a train station and a harbour.
